Bamberg, city, Bavaria Land (state), south-focal Germany. It lies along the canalized Regnitz River, 2 miles (3 km) over the last's conjunction with the Main River, north of Nürnberg. First referenced in 902 as the seat of the hereditary palace of the Babenberg family, Bamberg turned into the seat of a ministerial office established there in 1007 by the Holy Roman ruler Henry II; the clerics became sovereigns of the realm during the thirteenth century. In 1459 the primary book imprinted in the German language was distributed in Bamberg. The city passed to Bavaria in 1802 after the secularization of the see. An archbishopric was laid out in 1817. Bamberg's majestic church (1004-1237) contains numerous outstanding sculptures, the burial chambers of Henry II, his better half, Cunegund, and Pope Clement II, and a wooden special raised area cut by Veit Stoss. There are two ministers' castles: the Alte Residenz, or old royal residence (1571-76), which houses a nearby history historical center, and the Neue Residenz (1695-1704), containing a few striking craftsmanship assortments. Other memorable structures incorporate the previous Benedictine nunnery and St. Michael's Church (blessed 1015), the twelfth century St. Jacob's Church, St. Martin's (1685-93), the old municipal center (1453; revamped 1744-56), the church of the old fort, Altenburg, and a few Baroque aristocrats' homes. In 1993 the town of Bamberg was assigned an UNESCO World Heritage site for its social impact, especially as the focal point of the Enlightenment in southern Germany during the eighteenth century.

Bamberg's enterprises incorporate the assembling of electrotechnical gear, materials and apparel, and food items. There is broad market cultivating and preparing. A previous Jesuit college (1648-1803), later a philosophical foundation, was joined with an educators school in 1972 to frame a Gesamthochschule (a college level organization for cutting edge specialized preparing). Inverse the Civic Theater is the E.T.A. Hoffmann house, where the artist and writer resided from 1808 to 1813. Bamberg's ensemble symphony has a global standing. Pop. (2005 est.) 70,081.
